Stormwater Infiltration
Another aspect of our job at Patriot Locating & Inspections, LLC is to check the city sewer system for Inflow and Infiltration from groundwater and stormwater.
Infiltration seeps into sewer pipes through holes, cracks, joint failures, and faulty sewer pipe connections. Inflow flows into sewers via roof drain downspouts, foundation drains, storm drain cross-connections, and through holes in maintenance hole covers.
Stormwater sewers go directly to local water bodies without being treated. Sanitary sewers go to a wastewater treatment plant to be treated before discharging into a local water body.
Extra water in the sanitary sewer system is a problem because it:
1) Takes up capacity in sewer lines and ends up at one of the local wastewater treatment facilities where it must be treated like sewage, resulting in higher treatment costs.
2) Requires new and larger wastewater facilities to convey and treat larger volumes of flow, resulting in higher capital expenditures.
3) During heavy rain, it contributes to sewer system overflows into homes and the local waterways, negatively impacting public health and the environment.
